Website Topic Considerations

There is a lot more thought that needs to go into choosing a website topic today than there was even just a few short years ago.

The question and answer site Quora for example covers more than 10,700 topics, yet the number of websites presently online are well over 600 million. (As of February 2012).

Does it concern you how many topics are already taken? Well it should. Since that’s not the kind of advice I would give myself I don’t expect you to dwell on it either.

There’s only one reason I added the emphasis on the sheer number of websites already in existence — to make you aware of the competition.

Of course if you’re intention is to build a website just for the pleasure of it, then you have no reason to be concerned about how many websites will be out there competing with you.

have Just so you don’t ever think building a successful website is ever going to be as easy as it once was fifteen years ago.

The competition is huge and its growing at about a steady 5% rate with every passing month.

all the timethe Internet is going to be mewhy I would let it concern me and so it should be the only reason it concerns you if it does at allI can think of to be concerned

Before I depress the hell out of you let me give you some good advice my Italian grandfather gave me back in September 2003 when I was building my favorite website and fretting over the measly 42 million websites I had to compete with. He reminded me to have a look around at how many pizza parlors and automotive repair shops are within my own town and the three other towns surrounding mine.

The point I want to make is that it doesn’t matter that there’s a pizza joint on every street corner. People who frequent the Internet today are more capricious and fickle than any brick and mortar consumer ever dreamed of being. What they consider to be a good pizza today won’t be as good as the pizza they’ll try out tomorrow.

The same holds true for websites. Just like the pizza parlor who lost half its customers to the new pizza parlor on the block, many veteran websites have lost thousands of visitors a month to a new and improved website.

You see, you may not have the resources to build the website with all the extra bells and whistles but you can certainly improve on something or do something just a little different. Most of the time its the little things that make the biggest improvements.

their a websitetoday won’t be as good as yours is tomorrow… assuming you follow ole CJ’s good website-building practices. (grin)

Another thing you shouldn’t waste too much time fretting over is how many websites are focusing on the same topic or topics that you wanted to. Screw what everybody else is doing! What matters is what you want to do. Don’t let what other people have done be the determining factor for what you’re going to do now!

A website is only as good as its builders confidence. Sure you’re going to have your doubts about whether you’re doing the right thing or not because your a beginner. Or your still learning but you have to believe in yourself. As humans, we know when we have made the right decision. Thinking about our choice makes us feel good inside, in both mind and body. Our gut instinct is never wrong. something feels rightchoices. If you like a particular topic and your gut feels good when you think about building a website around this topic… then do it! If whenever you think about building a website around this topic it makes your mind feel good too… it’s no longer a question. Do it!

, and you know a lot about it, or know a little about it but enjoy enough to continue learning more about it then something about itand your ups and downs The choice is yours  Don’t let anybody else make that choice for you. If you let other peoples website topics determine the website topic you’re going to focus on, then you may as well ask those other webmasters how they think you should build your website too.

what topic you can and can’t doyour website

think you can do doesn’t matter if you didn’t think of a website concept first and it doesn’t matter if you don’t have the resources for grandeur website. You can still make a damn good go of it. You can at least  give your competitors something else to big idea doesn’t mean that I couldn’t at least try to do something better or different.

That’s the key if I didn’t have the resources to do something huge or come with an idea before the guy or gal… it doesn’t mean that I couldn’t  in September 2003. on that note by the end of January 2012It’s hard enough trying to decide what to build your website about with at least 1000 literally hundreds and thousands of in order to create a successful website today than simply choosing something you know something about There’s a gowing need for website topic ideas as more and more people flock to the Internet trying to make a few extra bucks or just to establish an online presence for themselves.

As unemployment numbers soar so do the number of Internet websites. It took about ten years for word to get around but the Internet has finally caught on.

Need ideas for website topics? Perhaps you’d like a list of topics for a website to point you in the right direction, if you’re wondering just what to write your site about!

Sometimes it’s hard to come up with great ideas when you’re in a hurry to get started.

So why not sit back and take a look at a variety of website themes just to see what might suit you?

Don’t just skim down the list!

Think about each one and whether it sparks any other idea in your brain… it’s amazing how one little idea can yield a sudden flash of genius inspiration :)

I’ve also included some tips about selecting a topic for a website, particularly for beginners.

Topic tips

Choose a topic you know something about – particularly if this is your first website; imagine trying to write every week about a subject that you find utterly boring!…You’d probably give up after a month or two – and your site wouldn’t exactly hum with enthusiasm either!

If you’re thinking of making money fast with an unknown topic – beware! No doubt thousands of others have thought exactly the same thing, about the same topic you’ve chosen, and you’ll be up against a lot of competition.

Choose a niche topic – don’t try and build a website about “animals”… just think how many pages you’d have to write to cover everything! Huge sites like National Geographic or the BBC dominate Google for this word. So – go for something with more focus, such as a particular breed of animal, for example.

Who is your site for? Men or women – teenagers or thirty-somethings-plus – experts or newbies – parents or grandparents – stressed professionals or desperate housewives…?! It pays to think about your target audience, because then you can speak to them directly from the pages of your website.

List of website topics

Many topics could suit several different categories. Work round the ideas – for example, collecting cards could give you ideas for all kinds of topics: trading cards, playing cards, sports cards, business cards… and DIY tips could mean painting, tiling, gardening or double glazing tips.

Blog vs Website

Blog vs Static Website

A static website is a series of pages linked together in a controlled fashion. “Static” simply means the data/pages are displayed to the user exactly as they are stored on the web server. The site organization/structure is manually controlled by HTML and CSS. This is a static website you’re reading now.

A blog is a special kind of website. Blogs are made up of a series of “posts” that are dated and often categorized. Blogs are dynamic, which means the pages are rendered by a script.

For example, you can display/sort a blog’s content by date or category. Because blogs are dynamic, the content can be displayed in a number of different ways.

The other main differences are…

  • Blogs have a section for comments
  • Blogs can be setup very quickly with no programming skills or software required. There’s a built-in WYSIWYG editor.
  • Websites require either hand-coding (HTML and CSS) or some kind of software/editor or web template. (I use Dreamweaver for this static website.) You may also need to publish the content to the Web using a separate (FTP) client

If you go to my blog, you’ll notice that the homepage always shows the most recent content (posts).

The latest posts are automatically rendered every time the page loads. I didn’t have to physically add the latest posts to the page. This is an example of dynamically generated content.

If you wanted to do this same thing with a static website, you’d have to manually add your latest content to your homepage using your software or by editing the code directly.

You can make a website function like a blog, but it takes a lot of additional programming and manual modifications.

Blogs are Easier to Setup, But…

Just because blogs are easier to setup, it doesn’t mean that’s the one you should choose. Many people make the mistake of choosing a blog when they really need a website. Static websites also tend to load faster and have cleaner code (great for search engine optimization).

A lot of people avoid creating static websites because they don’t have access to the templates that bloggers do. The main reason I developed my CSS web templates is to make static website creation a breeze so it’s not so intimidating.

Watch the video below to learn more about the differences.

Now that you understand more about how blogs and websites are organized, hopefully you can make a more educated decision on what’s best for your needs.

I personally have always made more money with my static websites than my blog. Part of that is because my static sites are older, but I also believe it has to do with how static websites are structured naturally (logical, controlled navigation). More info in the video below…

Website Gone from Google

Too often in webmaster forums and SEO JunkieAnonymous meetings around the world do you run into the situation where a webmaster panics after having their rankings in Google disappear. And why shouldn’t they panic? Google is the 800 pound gorilla, a good ranking in Google can make or break your site. If your Internet ventures are your only source of income you could be screwed. I speak from personal experience, I’ve had a 6 figure a year site drop from Google suddenly, it isn’t fun.]

Choosing Reliable Web Hosts

Which Web Host is the Most Reliable ?

“Which web host should I choose?” — “Which web host is the best?” Those have got to be the two most commonly asked web host questions of all times. But despite the hundreds of times I’ve answered those two questions with the same cordial “I don’t know.” …the identically same questions would be posed to me at least once again by the very same students before the end of that very same semester. (grin)

Five Steps To an Online Presence

Here you will see for yourself the true simplicity of what is really involved in the website-creation process.

The scope of  registering your own website (aka domain), designing and building a website can be broken down into a mere five basic category’s or steps.

This way is more understandable than any amalgamated guide and certainly much easier to recall than the superfluous number of sub-steps more suited for the advanced website builders

The following paragraphs consist of the Five (5) basic steps involved in owning a website, building a website, building a Blog, building a Forum or designing a starter Business.

  •  Note:  All blue-colored text are clickable links that will transport you to other pages within this website that hold additional detailed information related to that text.

The Five Basic Steps to Owning and Building a Website

Step #1
Choose a website Topic

This is the initial step you took before you came here when you decided that you wanted to build a website of your own. This is the step when you decide the purpose of your website, subjects you plan to deliberate and things you plan to discuss all wrapped up in one or more words called a topic. (Details here)

Step #2
Choose a reliable web host

Here is when you either decide to spend considerable time carefully researching web hosts yourself or be willing to take good advice as to which webhosting service will most reliably and competently manage your website’s files. Make the wrong choice here and all your hard work building a website will have been for nothing. (Details here)

Step #3
Choose a Domain (aka name of your website)

A domain is not only your website’s name but it’s also part of your website’s Internet address. Like the topic however, the domain name is just as important to building a successful website. (Details here)

Step #4
Build your website

Designing and building your own website is as personal to some website owners as painting the Sistine Chapel was to Michelangelo.

Each web host provides all the necessary website-building tools. Some are much better than others. Some of the better beginner-friendly site-builders are powerful yet easier to use. Choosing the right site-builder can make the difference between a professional-looking website and an amateurish-looking site, as well as how well it functions. (Details here)

Step #5
Publishing your website

Publishing your website is the easiest step of all. It usually involves clicking one button that reads “Publish”. (Details here)

There may be plenty of gimmick-sellers out there that will tell you how to create an online presence in one step for the small price of just $19.95, you could just as easily break the following five steps into eighteen little steps for $47.99 or more.

And yes, there were many a webmaster who designed similar self-serving nonsense — so beware!

Build a Topic-Website or a No-Topic Website

This article is meant to help those of you who want to build a successful website but are confused about the importance of topic choice.

Realize there are already 575 million websites online and a vast portion of these websites cover the same topics.

For example, the subject of “Android Cellphone Applications” resulted in 181 million website hits on Google. Of course, a large portion of those hits were probably the same websites using different keywords.

It’s important to realize what you’re up against and why it’s so crucial that you consider your website topic carefully if you’re hoping to build a real money-maker.

Many beginners want to start off by building a Hodgepodge website. Their line of thinking is that by covering more topics, they will attract more people and hence, make more money. There is so much more to it.

Most beginners don’t realize how much of a negative impact not having a specific topic can have on their first website attempt.

So much of your website’s success relies heavily upon how attractive or unattractive the search engines perceive your website to be.

Website optimization and search engine optimization are two terms you may grow to hate before you make your first dollar but the pay-off will be well worth your time and aggravation.

Back to that hodgepodge scenario
If you’re really considering building a website that covers a variety of topics, my honest opinion is.. “Go for it.”.

The only difference, in my opinion, between a niche topic website and a hodgepodge website is the number of hours you need to invest in it.

The truth is, any website that covers more than one topic in depth enough to be regarded as a quality website by the search engines usually requires input from more than just one person.

The bottom line on hodgepodge topic websites:

thing more Unfortunately, you may find you need more

invested Assuming you still want to build the next Huffington Post, Associated Press or Cnet.com you need to ask yourself something elseAre you aware of how many hours one person invests in a single-topic website? How many hours againIt is not my intention to overwhelm you with what can easily be construed as hopelessness, but you need to know how much scrutiny the search engines place upon website topics today.

are under o much scrutiny from the search engines today.

and the sheer number of man-hours required to accomplish such an undertaking.

Choosing an unpopular topic will have just as much of a negative impact on your website’s chances of becoming successful.

Most beginners think they can just slap a website together by throwing up a few regurgitated articles, a couple images, an affiliate program and of course Googles Adsense, sit back and watch all sorts of traffic and money start rolling in.

It isn’t that easy. As a matter of fact, Google themselves have spent considerable time and effort putting together an encyclopedia’s worth of information explaining just the contrary.

Search engines demand high quality from websites today. Googles latest changes (aka Panda) are one example of how low-quality content can adversely affect your website’s traffic and ability to generate revenue.

Before we move on let me give you a few website topic tips.
You won’t need to concern yourself with choosing a topic for your website if:

  1. you have no intention of building a popular website.
  2. you’re not hoping to eventually make any money with your website.
  3. you don’t care who finds your website other than those within your own social circle or those who link to your website via your Facebook account or any other source you create.

The best part about not being overly fond of building your website around any one specific category is that you won’t have to bother yourself with any of the research that’s involved.

Not having to research any of those factors will considerably reduce the overall amount of website-building time.

If your only concern is how quickly you can get your website built and published… don’t concern yourself with choosing website topic.

How about a Hodgepodge of Topics?

There are many websites online today that are trying out the hodgepodge-appeal. What they don’t realize is that it takes a lot of time and resources to maintain a site that covers so many different topics and categories.

CNN for example has 100 people working in their Atlanta, Georgia newsroom alone.

Besides all the money it takes to recruit the reporters and experts needed to generate accurate and interesting articles, it takes just as much time to optimize every post before the search engines will bother to consider it for listing in their results pages. (with or without the aide of software)

Until you have the kind of revenue you’ll need to put a website like The Huffington Post, Softonic, PCmag, or About.com together you should stick with smaller sites for now until such time you can afford to go bigger.

The hodgepodge-appeal is one of those endeavors that’s just attractive enough to get a beginner website-builder over their head in work that’s categorically impossible for any single person to handle.

The MySpace–Facebook faceoff

Many entrepreneurs dream of building the next Facebook. Before Facebook, many veteran webmasters wished they had thought of MySpace first.

It is not my intention to tarnish the image or credibility of anyone implied, the only point I want to make to you is that many people credited with being pioneers and trailblazers would have never made it as far as they did had it not been for the shoulders of the giants they stood upon.

This is true in every field. From automotive technologies to nuclear medicine to computer software to websites.

So do not allow yourself to become disheartened by the sheer number of websites that have already been published online or the multitude of topics that have already been addressed 1000 times over.

Look at how immensely popular MySpace was. Who would have thought it’s demise would have come at the hand of some geeky computer programmer. Even Mark Zuckerberg himself had no intention of Facebook evolving into what it did. It took on a life of its own, practically alien to what Zuckerberg originally designed Facebook for.

Despite MySpace’s popularity, despite Netscape, AOL and Yahoo’s popularity, there’s always going to be that one determined competitor standing in the wings waiting for their opening moment.

So do not be discouraged by all the topics that already being covered by the hundreds or thousands of websites already out there. After all, where would all the successful family operated pizza parlors or restaurants be if they allowed themselves to be intimidated by the Dominoes Pizza’s or Olive Garden’s? They would have never known just how successful they could have been.

No Topic means No Traffic

Because you’re a novice my recommendation is don’t be a no-topic website. The search engines are in this to make money too, so if your website doesn’t seem to appeal to enough people, the search engines won’t be interested in your website.

You need search engines to regard your website as appealing. If they don’t find your website appealing, they won’t list you in the search results pages. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you don’t need a search engine to help promote your website.

There are an estimated 555 million websites online, so even the person who frequents the Internet daily has only visited less than .0001% of all the websites online. The odds of ever being found are pretty slim.

So again, what does this mean to you? It means that since your chances of anybody finding you are slim to none you should reconsider choosing a topic to build your website around as opposed to not.

Don’t cut corners or be afraid of the extra work. If your website isn’t a high quality site with high quality content then the search engines are not going to be attracted to you or list you in their search results pages.

As a beginner, you must start out small. This way you can be sure to handle the topic research and search engine optimizing workload you’ll be faced with in order to get the attention of the search engines and eventually get a high page rank.

The better your website’s page rank, the more exposure for your website. Without the support of a search engine, your website will remain forever undiscovered in a sea of websites.
